Retirement IQ Check

State income tax

Also called: relocation

States tax retirement income very differently. Some have no income tax, many exempt Social Security, and several exclude part or all of pension and IRA income, often above a set age.

RetIQ models all 50 states and DC, including each state's treatment of Social Security and retirement income. Interest from another state's municipal bonds is usually taxable by your state even though it is federally exempt.

The Decide → Relocation card shows the long-run effect of moving to a different state. It changes your state income tax from the move age, and — because a modeled move also sets your state of domicile at plan end — the state estate and inheritance tax in the Estate & Net-to-Heirs panel (Legacy). Relocation is geography only — a home sale plus purchase is modeled on the Home / Real Estate card (Inputs → Real Estate), which is linked to the Relocation card.

Additional moves can model several relocations, applied in age/month order. The state estate/inheritance tax follows the domicile at plan end, so a temporary move to a no-tax state and back does not reduce the death tax.
