Medicare IRMAA Life-Changing Event request · Also called: life-changing event, IRMAA appeal, LCE
The form used to ask SSA to base your IRMAA on more recent, lower income after a life-changing event such as retiring, instead of the tax return from two years ago.
SSA recognizes eight events: marriage, divorce or annulment, death of a spouse, work stoppage, work reduction, loss of income-producing property beyond your control, loss or reduction of pension income, and an employer settlement payment.
Income spikes that are not on the list, such as a Roth conversion, a capital gain or a large withdrawal, do not qualify. Retirement does, which matters because the first two Medicare years are otherwise priced on working-year income.
