Senior deduction

Also called: OBBBA senior deduction, bonus deduction for seniors

A temporary deduction of up to $6,000 per person age 65 or older, for tax years 2025 through 2028. It shrinks by 6 cents for every dollar of MAGI above $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (joint).

It is separate from, and in addition to, the regular additional standard deduction for age 65. The statute makes it available whether you take the standard deduction or itemize. Married couples must file jointly to claim it.

Because it phases out with income, a Roth conversion or large withdrawal inside the phase-out range costs more than the bracket rate suggests.
