Also called: standard premium
The monthly charge for Medicare Part B. CMS sets one standard amount each year; each enrolled person pays it, and it is normally deducted from the Social Security check.
The standard premium is set to cover about a quarter of Part B's expected cost and has historically risen faster than general inflation. People with higher incomes pay the standard premium plus an IRMAA surcharge.
Social Security benefits are taxed on the gross amount, before the Part B deduction.
