Divorced-spouse benefit

Also called: ex-spouse benefit, divorced spouse Social Security

An unmarried person who was married 10 years or more can claim up to 50% of an ex-spouse's PIA at their own full retirement age — reduced if claimed earlier, with no delayed credits.

The claimant must be unmarried and at least 62, and the marriage must have lasted 10 years. The ex-spouse need not have filed if the divorce has been final for at least two years; otherwise the ex must be entitled.

It is paid as a floor — you receive whichever is higher, your own benefit or the divorced-spouse amount — and it does not reduce the ex-spouse's benefit. RetIQ models it on a single plan (the Divorced-spouse benefit card on the Social Security tab), and the SS Claiming Optimizer accounts for the floor.
